Education/Westminster/ Oxford House College
-
Oxford House College is a language school based in central London. HEAT carried out the refurbishment of their new four storey premises including creating Classrooms, a library, Common Room, Staff Room and cafeteria together with signage and branding. The design successfully used existing elements of the Edwardian interiors and created fresh and creative interior spaces for learning.

Education/Kensington & Chelsea/ College Review
-
Ashbourne College is a private sixth form college near High Street Kensington. HEAT were asked to review the internal layout and make proposals for expanding the premises. School budgets and timetables are cyclical and it is helpful for schools to have a premises development plan in place to avoid making changes in one year that stymie plans for development the following year. HEAT undertook a quick feasibility study of three options for development.

Education/Haringey/ North London Primary School
-
A problem common to many schools is that capital funding comes in annual tranches and is often uncertain or reserved for specific projects. So schools often grow in a haphazard fashion and the IT suite that you added last year turns out to be in the wrong location when you come to upgrade the playground the following year.
For St Martin of Porres primary school in the London Borough of Haringey, HEAT drew up a master plan for development of the school over the next ten years. This included new amenities such as a multipurpose hall and landscaping – gardens for each key stage and new entrance and circulation. This allowed the school to bid for funding and plan their resources efficiently.
HEAT involved all the stakeholders; children, parents, staff and the local community and led the negotiations with the local authority and DfES. We held an “Architecture Day” at the school, giving talks to the children on techniques such as measuring, construction and design and then led a series of workshops where the pupils designed their own interpretations of the new school.

Developer/Listed Building/Merton/ Listed House Transformation
-
HEAT have gained a remarkable planning consent for the transformation of an eight bedroom Edwardian house in Wimbledon. Whilst at the front this “locally listed” house would remain the same the rear will be completely rebuilt with a huge glazed kitchen extension with panoramic doors that slide down into the floor. A new basement under the house will house a gym lit by sunlight passing through the glass-floored swimming pool over. A gracious cantilevered helical staircase unites the new floors and brings sunlight right down to the basement level.
Permission for this fabulous design was the result of six months detailed work with Merton Council planners who were extremely clear and helpful.

Brent/Permitted development/ Queens Park Success
-
For this large semi-detached family home in Queens Park, HEAT have obtained planning consent for a roof extension and new conservatory as part of a package of refurbishments and improvements. Some alterations only required a Certificate of Lawful Development, some required planning and conservation area consents. The alterations were subtle, but completely transformed the way that the house is used. The interior design included striking timber panelled bathrooms.

Developer/Islington/New Build/Planning Appeal/ Islington Appeal Success
-
HEAT have won consent for a detached house in Islington following an appeal. The scheme involves the partial demolition of an undistinguished post-war house in a Victorian Street and extensions at the front rear and roof, effectively creating a completely new house. The appeal inspector praised the sensitive design solution.

Developer/Islington/ Clerkenwell Conversion
-
Before founding HEAT, Charles Humphries had worked on the conversion of a warehouse in Clerkenwell for the imaging company Metro. As Metro were moving to new premises HEAT were asked to review the conversion of the building to a Headquarters building for sale or on the rental market and carried out a feasibility study. The building was subsequently let to an international fashion brand.

Developer/Ealing/ Art Deco Restoration
-
HEAT Architecture have developed a scheme for the regeneration of a landmark early C20th industrial building. Originally designed in the Art Deco style, the building had suffered years of under investment and was badly in need to upgrading. The solution proposed by HEAT is to add two floors of lightweight glazed residential accommodation at roof level and use the income generated to upgrade the B1 accommodation and recreate the Art Deco façade of the building.

Brent/Permitted development/ Exercise in Permitted Development
-
This was a quick exercise on a couple of houses in West London to see what the maximum permitted development would be, without applying for planning permission. The result was surprising – roof extensions and rear extensions were possible, that made the plans work much better. Within a couple of weeks the plans were drawn and ready to start on site without the delays of applying for planning consent.
